Day 12 : In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a podfic, an icon, a sketch, a meta, or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Cross stitch. Draft an essay about a particular medium. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of book you love, a ship manifesto, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Create something.

My snowflake challenge got to a stop because of real life (work starting again), but on the weekend I took part in Drabble Day 2018 and created six drabbles in the following fandoms:

Bandom (My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy), Sherlock (TV), Alles was zählt, Calvin & Hobbes

I posted them on AO3 today, so check them out!

Day 11: Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

Only this week I saw reports about the first openly gay figure skater taking part in the Olympics, Adam Rippon. Of course years ago I knew another openly gay figure skater who did it all before: Roman Wild. He was one of the two main characters of my first fandom "Alles Was Zählt". Check out my tag on DW or AO3 if you're interested.

For my Day 9 of the Snowflake-Challenge I uploaded a AWZ / Doctor Who crossover photo-comic to AO3.

What I loved about this fandom was mostly the international community, first on YouTube (where the EKP (Eskimo Kiss Project) cut the best scenes from every episode and subtitled them so that non-German speaking folk could enjoy them as well), then on InsaneJournal. I feel still close to a lot of the people who were involved, even though we've moved in different fandom-directions. But we still share the same humour that made being an AWZ-fan so great. Unfortunately the TV-company didn't like their show to be shared on YT (long story) any more, so all the fanvids that my fandom-friends made were disabled, too. I found some, but what I really loved about the fandom, the humour, loving-mockery and non-too-sappy enjoyment is gone.

This fandom changed me from pure lurker to participant, gave me insight into social networking in so many ways and made me enjoy crack and smut. Often at the same time.

I will link to a couple of videos, even though they were made long after the "real EKP-fandom" was gone (The first two definitely).

1) this did make me smile and feel a bit sad because I miss this happiness. And yes, they did kiss a lot (and still not enough)

2) The second video was supposed to prove that the show WAS about figure-skaters, because in the first video that was coming a bit short. But - well, have more kissing and a slightly too sappy song. But... the kissing...

3) ICE-SKATING!!!!

Oh memories!

Day 10: In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most. Feel free to include recs and examples!

I'm reading a lot of different kinds of fics. I don't really have an OTP, even though I have favourite pairings in the fandoms I read. So I don't have a special trope etc. that I'm searching for, but why I enjoy reading Bandom-fics so much might be because of the band-, gang-, friendship-group thing. Friends to lovers, pining, getting together, found families - these are a lot of the themes going on that I enjoy reading. I like humour, fluff and happy endings, but if it gets too sweet and loved-up I might cringe.

I feel very lucky to have found a lot of brilliant authors that I follow on AO3, and I'm still discovering new ones, so I won't run out of fic to read in the forseeable future.

Day 9 : In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

I just scanned through my recs from previous years. Because I only posted one fanwork in 2017 so there are not enough new things for me to rec.

I had linked mostly to my fic, so this time I've decided to link to some graphics/comics/digital art that I made and had a lot of fun creating.

1) Alles Who's Zählt
- Photobucket ate my pictures in the original post on Insane Journal, so I've just uploaded it to AO3 -

Originally created as a birthday present for a friend in my first active fandom "Alles Was Zählt" in 2011, this comic is  a cracky mix-up with Doctor Who. I had so much fun creating it so I thought this would be a good opportunity for a re-upload.

Creaotor: winterlover
Fandom: AWZ/Dr.Who (10th doctor)
Additional Info: graphics-heavy
Rating: G
Summary: “There’s an Alien in the Center. Who could it be?”
Warnings/Spoilers: rapid time-movements, i.e. haircuts and clothing from different eras and blurry pictures.
Author's Notes: I don’t own any of those characters or pictures.
They belong to RTL and BBC and some unknown artists/photographers.
No money is made from this. (Originally created for lilithilien’s birthday.)

2) Lost in Space

Created for [personal profile] turlough for the bandom_meme fanwork gift exchange 2013, prompt set #9 "Gerard/Grant Morrison, lost in space - because space AUs are awesome!"

Creator: winterlover
Fandom: Bandom/ComicsRPF/Dr.Who (5th doctor)
Additional Info: graphics-heavy
Rating: G
Summary: “Gerard Way and Grant Morrison lost in Space.”
Warnings/Spoilers: none
Author's Notes: I don’t own any of those characters or pictures. No money is made from this.

3) Art for "No Future In Our Dreaming" by Prophetic

Creator: winterlover
Fandom: Bandom, My Chemical Romance, London
Additional Info: graphics-heavy
Rating: G
Summary: Art for Prophetic's story "No Future In Our Dreaming" for Bandom Big Bang 2016.
Warnings/Spoilers: none
Author's Notes: I own most of those pictures, only borrowed some.
No money is made from this.

This is my most "critically acclaimed" artwork (meaning the number of comments and kudos on AO3) and I'm proud of what I did because I used mostly photos I had taken myself (the London-pics, not the photos of the bandom-guys) and had a lot of fun altering them to fit the noir and moody theme of Prophetic's fic. I especially loved creating the bedroom-picture where I put some of the photos on the wall in the background and even added some real artwork from Gerard Way's twitter (or instagram?).

Day 8: In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

What else could I write about than my first and non-digital fandom on this day when it's his birthday!
David Bowie would have been 71 years old today, on January 8th.

I became a fan when I was 15. One year later I exchanged letters with other fans. If the internet as we know it now had existed then, I'd been active on tumblr, LJ, twitter and everywhere, but we had our ways to connect as well, swapping tapes and videos, collecting articles and writing, writing, writing letters to each other.

The first time I met a fellow fan in real life was at a Bowie convention in Essen, Germany, which was an exciting day. We watched videos, looked at all the merchandise and talked about David Bowie.
The next year we visited the second convention and met more fans in person. We saw him live, wrote more letters.... and drifted apart.

I lost contact to most of the fans and never really started to join the online Bowie-fandom. Probably also due to the fact that you had to pay to access all features of "Bowienet", the official website, which kept me away during the first years, and now that there are many more possibilities to access info, I have turned to other fandoms.

I do love to browse tumblr for pictures and watch videos on Youtube, follow some twitters, but I don't really interact with Bowie fans. Well, there's a time for everything.

Here are two pictures I took at that second convention that I had digitalized
recently:

Bowie Convention Essen, 01

(promo-pictures and -records, and two Bowie-dolls)

Bowie Convention Essen, 02

(original suit he wore as Ziggy Stardust (right) and the red Glass Spider Tour suit from 1997)

P.S. I seem to turn to Bowie every time on Snowflake challenge. But with January being the month of his birth (8th) and of his death (10th), it's understandable, isn't it?

I made some icons in 2013.

I shared a video in 2014.

I was happy about a new release in 2016.

I mourned him in 2016.

So I celebrate him today! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, David!

Day 7 : In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Surf the comments and find people to give love to.

Well, I'm skipping my own love meme, but I gave love and well-wishes to someone else.

Day 6: Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

If you've already left feedback in the course of a previous challenge, it totally counts. But you're free to leave more feedback.

I did it. I checked out some of the recs from Day 3 and also commented on other fanworks during the last days.

Day 5: Recommend a fannish or creative resource.

Can't really do this at the moment. Maybe I'll come across something, will add it later then.

Day 4: In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see.

I don't have many wishes, but because other people have mentioned the lack of comments for fanwork, I guess maybe the small number of kudos or comments on my artwork, compared to the number of views, is not because it's so bad but maybe because artwork on AO3 is rare and more lilely to be consumed than appreciated.
I must admit being guilty myself. So I promise to be better in regards to kudos and comments for artwork and wish for others to be as well.

Day 3: In your own space, post  post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

I love this part of the challenge and I'm sure I will find some fanworks that I will enjoy in other people's posts. I was looking through my AO3 bookmarks trying to remember the reasons why I bookmarked the fics other than that I thought they were brilliant.

1)
"Empty With You" by  akamine_chan and Jiksa
Words: 36.411
Rating: Explicit
Archive Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Categories: M/M, F/M
Fandoms: My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Bandom
Relationships: Frank Iero/Gerard Way, Mikey Way/Pete Wentz, Kristin Blanford/Mikey Way, Patrick Stump/Pete Wentz, Lindsey Ballato/Gerard Way

A soulbond-fic about not-soulbonding. This collaboration was done for this year's Bandom Big Bang and when you have read fic from both authors, you know that their combined effort had to be even more heartbreaking and rewarding. To cite myself from my comment: I also love that, even if it's not really featuring the Bandom-bands as themselves, it's still set with music, in clubs, Gerard performing, and cameos of almost everyone throughout the story.

2)
"Dance While the Sky Crashes Down" by maryangel
Words: 55.940
Rating: Explicit
Archive Warning: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Category: M/M
Fandom: My Chemical Romance
Relationship: Frank/Gerard
Additional Tags: Podfic Desired

It's an apocalypse-road-trip story. I couldn't stop reading until the end (no pun intended).

3)
"The White Stone" by Aldiara
Words: 78.827
Rating: Explicit
Archive Warning: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Category: M/M
Fandoms: Spartacus Series (TV), Spartacus: War of the Damned
Relationships: Castus/Sabinus, Agron/Nasir, Belesa/Saxa, Tiberius Licinius Crassus/Sabinus

As my third rec I included a fic that I haven't read yet, because of lack of time before and around christmas. But I know the author. She's a brilliant writer and I have read her other fics and admired not only her ability to tell great stories, but also her use of language, especially in her Spartacus-fics, which fits the subject so well. Go and check out her shorter stories if you don't want to jump into a long one first. She's also written in other fandoms, so go to her AO3 and have a look!

Day 2: In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

I‘ve not participated in many fandoms, but in the two that I mainly write or create in I‘ve been welcomed by lovely people. I was shyly lurking long before I tried to comment or create myself, but friendly replies or kudos were a great reward.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge   -  Day 1

In your own space, talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. What drew you to it? What did you take away from it? What do you hope to accomplish this year?

OMG, it’s 2018 already, and I’m still at my friend‘s house where I celebrated New Year‘s.

I‘ve been taking part in the Snowflake Challenge for some years now. Last year I wasn’t home during the first days, and after that work stopped me doing most of the days. This year I‘ll try to do at least a few more.

I like the low pressure nature of it, I like to read other fan‘s entries, and I enjoyed being inspired to create by seeing others‘ enthusiasm.

I hope that this year I will be able to write and to create something. At least I‘m looking forward to trying.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner 2018

I have been very quiet on here and still feel sorry for not finishing the Snowflake Challenge 2017. I'm not sure if I'll be able to do it this time, but I still want to signal-boost (if anyone ever reads this, lol).
