[community profile] snowflake_challenge - Day 8

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

Done. And it was fun.

Snowflake Challenge 2016 - Day 7 [community profile] snowflake_challenge  - Day X
In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

What a great day for this challenge: David Bowie has released his newest video "Lazarus" today, and tomorrow is the day that his new album "Blackstar" goes on sale.
The first time I started interacting with other fans was because of David Bowies. We swapped tapes and videos and articles, wrote letters and met at parties and concerts.
I feel lucky because I was able to see Bowie performing live several times.
Although I'm not really in touch with other fans anymore, I still buy his records and enjoy his strange artistic output.
Here's an old favourite, performed live:

And this is his new video for "Lazarus": Link to VEVO here if the embedding doesn't work.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge  - Day 6

In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it.

Engage with other fans. Spark some discussion or creativity. Have fun!

*skips* (I prefer to look at other peoples' challenges.)

[community profile] snowflake_challenge  - Day 5

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

If you've already left feedback in the course of a previous challenge, it totally counts. But you're free to leave more feedback.

Creators create for a number of reasons. Often, we find ourselves inspired, and in the moment, we create. But creation doesn't occur in a vacuum, and it's too easy to walk away from a fanwork without saying anything.
Creators create for themselves, but they need to know that they have an audience and that their fanworks are being enjoyed by others. Feedback is a way to get some validation that what you've created is good.
Sometimes we go to comment on a fanwork and we find ourselves without the words to express how we feel about the fanwork. Or we become overwhelmed by all the amazing comments the fanwork has already gotten.
Don't let either of these things stop you from leaving a comment. There's no prize for the Best Comment Ever, and the creator just needs to know that you enjoyed the fruits of their labor.

I started doing this yesterday and will continue doing it. *goes to read entries for days 3 and 4*

[community profile] snowflake_challenge  - Day 4

In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Draft a critical essay about a particular media. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of a Broadway show, a movie, a concert, a poetry reading, a museum trip, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Compose some limericks, haikus, free-form poetry, 5-word stories. Document a particular bit of real person canon. Take some pictures. Draw a stick-figure comic. Create something.

This would be a good time to look through the Day 2 wish lists of participants to get ideas for fanworks you can create. And yes, it totally counts if you already created something to fulfill a wish for someone.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge  -  Day 3

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

We create stuff because we love doing it, so getting to talk about what we've done and why we love it - how great is that? It doesn't have to be your most popular fanwork, or the one you think is the best representation of what you do. It can be something you did today, or decades ago, whatever you created that you want to share. And remember, we're open to any and all kinds of fanworks. Fic, podfic, knitting, meta, a rec list, fanmix... the list is pretty much endless. If you think it qualifies, then it totally does. End of story :)

1) Icons and Artwork for the Bandom Holiday Exchange 2015
My most recent work. I'm very happy that the recipient liked what I created.

2) Poison Pink
Art and ficlet for a [community profile] bandom_meme  prompt.

3) Oh, Tom
Words for the little known fandom "Alles Was Zählt" which I mentioned in another entry. No knowledge of the fandom is necessary to read this, mostly because I finished an old draft and have no idea myself what exactly this was about. But I liked the sentiment, so I put it on AO3.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge  -  Day 2

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.
Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish
.

Asking for things is hard. We're socialized to not ask for things, and in a lot of ways I think that's not necessarily a good thing. We feel guilt and shame when we ask, and that makes us less likely to ask for help, for care and consideration and kindness, for respect, when we all deserve those things.

When I read the explanation to this challenge I remembered a quote that U2 used in one of their videos some time ago: "A friend is someone who lets you help." It's so true, but also amazing. As a child you write a wish-list for Christmas in no time, when you're older it's harder to ask for things, especially because they're usually not the things someone can buy for you.
But I digress!

1) I was late discovering bandom fics, so if anyone knows long, epic, multi-chaptered, brilliantly written bandom-fic that is not on AO3 (because those are likely to have been read by me already) but hidden in a journal or another site, please rec. (Bandom, preferable MCR, PintD or FOB)

2) I always feel bad for wishing for a podfic of one of my written things, because a) the podficcers should choose themselves what they want to read, b) my things are way too short to podfic, c) there was a third reason somewhere... oh right, most of my longer stories are for an unknown fandom
But this challenge might be an opportunity to state the wish, just in case - maybe someone wants to try podficcing and is looking for a drabble to start with... *giggles*

3) I really haven't got a third wish at the moment. Maybe I'll think of something later.

This year I'm late to the challenge because I was away for the last few days to celebrate New Years Eve with a friend, but now that I'm home again I'm looking forward to catching up with reading the others' entries and challenging myself. So, let's start:

[community profile] snowflake_challenge  - Day 1

In your own space, talk about why you are doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? What drew you to it as a participant? What do you hope to accomplish by doing these challenges?

I usually start work after the holidays on January 7th, so the Snowflake Challenge always has been a lovely thing to start the new year and spend my days off doing fannish stuff. Looking forward to a new challenge each day also made the first days of work in January easier.
Of course I also make resolutions to create more during the coming year - with mixed results. Oh well.
Mostly I do it because it's fun and a great opportunity to read about other fans and their fandoms.

First of all, Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays!

Over here we're celebrating on Christmas Eve, but this year I got one more present on Christmas Day.

A mystery author ([archiveofourown.org profile] syrupwit who will be revealed in January) wrote me a "Killjoys"-fic for the bandom holidays gift exchange.

If you like Fun Ghoul/Party Poison and gay boys with issues, read "baby, you're much too fast" here on AO3.

Well, that was quick!

Yesterday I finished the third book in my reading bingo. I started on saturday on a short subway-journey, then sat in a park reading more, then went home and spent all saturday evening and sunday reading the rest. It definitely was unputdownable (I always wanted to use this word, yay!)

"The Martian" by Andy Weir

It fits in the following Bingo Squares:

Card 1 - Mix and Match: "Book by an author I've never read."
[No, it's not "set in place you've wanted to visit for a long time" - I will never want to leave Earth!!!]

Card 2 - Random: "Book without magical creatures"
[I did wait for aliens to show up. Or something unnatural to happen. But no, all the magic was physics and chemistry. Fascinating!]

Card 3 - Serious: doesn't fit any of the squares. Except - FREE SPACE. #lol

I was really gripped by the book. It tells the story of an astronaut in the future, stranded on Mars. The suspense made me read on and on.
I liked the tone of the log-entries that were written by the astronaut. Sometimes it made me giggle and hold my breath at the same time. Later on there were parts that narrated the events in the spaceship and in the control centre. And there even were two short chapters told from the planet's point of view (I think).

While reading I had Google Earth, erm Google Mars open on my laptop (site 1 and site 2) where I tried to map and follow the main character's journey. It was fascinating reading fiction woven together with facts about this far away planet.

Also, Murphy's right. If something can go wrong, it will.

Right now I'll need a week of reading curtain fic to get down from the tension  - the one where they already have chosen the curtain - I can't stand any life-changing decisions right now.

Today I finished the second book that fits in any of the squares. It's not the second book I read this year, but I must admit, I read more fic on AO3 than books recently.

"How To Build A Girl" by Caitlin Moran

It fits in the following Bingo Squares:

Card 1 - Mix and Match: "Book where main male and main female characters don't fall in love"
[One can argue about that probably. First of all who actually is the main male character, but anyway, it's not the typical girl meets boy and they fall in love story.]

Card 2 - Random: "Book by author who shares first letter of your last name"  [It's actually the first two letters of our last name we are sharing.]

Card 3 - Serious: "Book with a female protagonist"

I'm not sure how to feel about this book. At first I was confused that the autor states that the story wasn't autobiographical. I had read her book "How To Be A Woman" where she tells us about herself being a 17 year old girl from Wolverhampton getting a job as music journalist in London, amongst other things.

Now she wrote a book about a 17 year old girl from Wolverhampton getting a job as music journalist in London. Not autobiographical. Hmm.

The book did move me, especially when she (Moran or the female protagonist who is not Moran) writes about how she loves music. The book is set in the early 90s, when I started to love about the same music as she does, and when she writes "..my love - all my actual, firece love - is for the third kind of music of 1992 - the stuff that's noisy and itchy. The music where I do find myself in the songs, all written by sexy, clever, angry freaks..." that is when I love the book. There are several sentences that made me say "YES, me too".

The rest is interesting. The book is said to be funny, but it's probably not my kind of humour because I haven't laughed much while reading. This girl is so not me. I read about her in a way like I look at a foreign species. And you don't laugh about things you don't know, only wonder.

For my first participation in [community profile] bandombigbang I chose to make complementary artwork for a fic.

I made graphics for Sundrowned's story "Hand in mine, into your icy blues".
I started out in a fandom about gay figure-skaters with issues, so I couldn't resist when I read the prompt for the story.

Title: Digital Art for Sundrowned's story "Hand in mine, into your icy blues"
Creator: [personal profile] winterlover
Bands: MCR
Pairings: Gerard/Frank
Characters: Gerard Way, Frank Iero, Mikey Way
Rating: Teen and up audiences
Warnings: blood - in one of the dividers
Summary: complementary artwork for Bandom Big Bang 2015, Wave One

I created three different kinds of graphics:

1) cover art

2) scene/chapter dividers [WARNING for blood in one of them]

3) three bigger pieces, inspired by quotes in the story.

[oh my, why does DW load so slowly for me lately?!? - let's try this entry]

Today I finished my first book of the year: "Spiel der Zeit" by Ulla Hahn

It fits in the following Bingo Squares:

Card 1 - Mix and Match: "Book with female protagonist"

Card 2 - Random: "Book given to you as a gift"

Card 3 - Serious: "Book by an author you've never read"

Roughly translated the title is "Game of the time". The book is the third in a series telling the story of a girl growing up in a small town in the middle of Germany. This book coveres her first year at university in Cologne during the political exciting years of 1967 and 1968 where she witnesses the start of the students protests and a change in politics while she's trying to manage her studies and her first love.

I got the book as a Christmas present from my parents. I haven't read the other parts of the story so I didn't understand some things of her past that are mentioned only shortly in this book.

The girl is a literary student (like the author herself) so the book is filled with mentions, quotes and explanations which is very interesting but also a bit exhausting to read. Her view on the political events is more from an outsider who just stumbled upon them, took part in some activities and protests but still remained in her mostly conservative world without being opposed to changes.

I roughly knew about what happened in Germany during the students protests but I looked up a lot of details on Wikipedia while reading this book.

I gave it three stars on goodreads, I liked it but didn't really emphathise with the protagonist. Maybe that's because I hadn't read the first two books, but I don't really feel the need to catch up on those.

Lately I've been disappointed a lot of times because none of the bands I would like to go and see live was coming anywhere near me since I had become interested in bandom-bands. To be fair, they all played here BEFORE. But not last year when I would have bought a ticket.

So I had been waiting excitedly for tour news, only to be disappointed. Again and again. 5 times actually, hence the title of this post. With one exception!

5 artists/bands who didn't play in my city and one (two) that did - under the cut because of pictures )

[community profile] snowflake_challenge  - Day 14

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

(Tell us about specific fanworks that you think are great. These could be your all-time favorites, or some things you found recently that you're really into, or just the first three things that pop up in your bookmarks or tags. However you want to work it out. Recs are love! ... See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser-known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom who maybe aren't well-known or appreciated. Appreciate them.)

I have quite a varied taste in fic. I read a lot, from short PWPs to long chaptered AUs, multiple pairings, in different fandoms, various tropes, kinks, etc. I usually avoid incest (but read when I trust the author) and stop reading when the writing is very bad or when there is a lot of (even consenting) shaming (not sure if it's even the right term for this, but anyway, I won't read it).
My favourite is bandom though. That's where I started creating a bit myself. But I've recced lots of bandom-fic already, in this year's Snowflake Challenge (check out my "recs" tag) and in past years (2014), so I tried to rec stories that are not what I usually read but got bookmarked by me as favourites. But before I read bandom I didn't have an AO3 account for long so I don't have many bookmarks that aren't bandom. Oh well...

"Just Like That River I've Been Running" by miss_begonia (17.044 words, explicit) is a Bandom (Brendon Urie)/Adam Lambert mix and my comment on the bookmark was "Love the glimpse into the musicians minds and hearts."

"If This Is Love" by sunsetmog (85.591 words, explicit) is not a lesser-known fic in a rare fandom. It's One Direction, Nick Grimshaw/Harry Styles. But sunsetmog is a writer who I follow everywhere. I just like their writing and characterisations, and this fic is no exception. The tags for that story are "Unresolved Sexual Tension, Coming Out, Best Friends, Angst, Baking, Quite a lot of angst, Christmas, Toblerone" - everything that I love.

"by streetlight this dark night" by clumsygyrl (thegirlthatisclumsy), (5.329 words, teen and up audiences), My Chemical Romance, Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling, Bob Bryar/Ron Weasley
“I carried an amp.” Ron said dryly. - Ron escapes his old life and finds a new one. I really like the beginning, how bleak Ron sees into the future, how war left everyone a loser. So nice to see him trying to getting his life back on track.

- And now for a few bandom-only-recs that I just came across again and thought maybe someone might like them:

"But Not the Song" by emilyray (emilyenrose), ignipes (192.263 words, explicit, other warnings) Panic! at the Disco, Ryan Ross/Spencer Smith/Brendon Urie/Jon Walker
"The epic bandom slavefic. Running and shooting and angsting and kissing and more angsting and a bunch of kids named Alex."

"Basement Rhapsody"-Series by autoschediastic, rivers_bend (27.514 words, explicit), Bandom, My Chemical Romance, Adam Lambert, Tommy Ratliff
A High-School-AU. I like how they write the guys. Not too cute.

"A Storm Brewing; in which the honorable Spencer Smith asks questions and finds answers" by bad_peppermint (25.073 words, general audiences), written for Bandom Big Bang 2013, Panic! at the Disco, Spencer Smith/Brendon Urie - and dragons.
Lovely AU with great detail in worldbuilding and insight in Spencer's thoughts and feelings.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge  - Day 13

In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing.

Can you rec a reccer? I think I do. Especially when they are a creator of so many more things.

[personal profile] turlough regularly posts recs for art, icons, graphics in bandom and classic Doctor Who and creates graphics and icons as well.

I really like her weekly recs for fics. She makes those posts special by including a paragraph or two of the story ("Quotation of the week"). Often the fic is one that's a bit older so I haven't read it yet and the few sentences in her posts make me curious. I'm always looking forward to her posts because with few exceptions I've always loved what she invited me to read.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge  - Day 12

In your own space, talk about what you bring to fandom. It can be something tangible, or not.

I've always been someone who's motivated by other peoples' enthusiasm and creativity. And of course by positive feedback, comments or kudos for my work.

So I try to give something back by commenting on fics that I loved or giving kudos. I always try to say why I enjoyed a particular story or what I thought about it because that's how I like it myself.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge  - Day 11

In your own space, post a rec for fannish and/or creative resources.

I'm not creating so much that I need special resources other than Google.

But for info on fannish things I keep coming to the fannish wiki-site, fanlore.

Quote from the site itself: "Fanlore is a collaborative site by, for, and about fans and fan communities that create and consume fanworks. Here, you can read about fan activities, fannish vocabulary, and the histories of fan communities -- and add your own voice, memories, and experiences to our collective story."

[community profile] snowflake_challenge  - Day 10

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or check out some fanworks that are new to you. (The recs from Day 1 might be a good place to start!).

I've looked on more art today than I usually do, and I've bookmarked a Teen Wolf hooker AU to read soon. So that is definitely something new for me.
