You're very much not alone in coming into a fandom through the fic. The only fandom I've fallen into because of my love of canon was the first (Classic Doctor Who). After that I've always discovered the fanfic & fandom first (crossover stories are the best!) and not fallen in love with the canon until afterwards - if ever! I know many people whose way through different fandoms are just like mine and we are all real fans :-)
